Here's a basic dress measurement guide that you can use to take accurate measurements for ordering or making dresses. Keep in mind that having someone help you with the measurements can lead to more accurate results. Additionally, make sure to use a flexible measuring tape and wear lightweight clothing while taking measurements.
Stand straight with feet together.
Measure in bare feet.
Begin at the top of the head and pull tape straight down to the floor.
This is not your bra size.
Wear an unpadded bra (your dress will have a built-in bra).
Relax arms at sides.
Take the tape around your back and bring it across the fullest part of your bust.
Find the natural waist.
Usually about 1 in above belly button.
Keep tape slightly loose to allow for breathing room.
Find the widest part of the hips.
Usually about 7 in below natural waist.
Tape should brush across both hipbones.
Stand straight with feet together.
Measure in bare feet.
Begin at the hollow space between the collarbones and pull tape straight down to the floor. Hollow to floor = Length from Collarbone to the Ground (excluding shoe height)
For dresses with a defined waist, measure from your natural waistline to the desired hemline.
Measure from the outer edge of one shoulder to the outer edge of the other shoulder. Make sure the tape is positioned at the base of your neck.
Measure from the top of your shoulder down to your wrist. Keep your arm slightly bent while measuring.
Measure around the base of your neck, where your collar would normally sit.
For dresses with sleeves, measure from the shoulder seam down to the desired sleeve length. If measuring on yourself, bend your arm slightly.
Measure around the fullest part of your upper arm.
Measure around the fullest part of your forearm, just below your elbow. Also, when measuring, try to stand naturally with good posture, as this will give you the most accurate measurements for a well-fitting dress.
